Gruppo Saviola is not just talking about sustainability; it’s implementing it with a robust plan aimed at limiting global temperature rise to within 1.5°C, aligning with the Paris Agreement. This plan, outlined in their 2023 sustainability report, includes two main strategies: direct investments to reduce emissions and initiatives targeting potential scenarios outside the company’s direct control, such as decarbonizing the supply chain and the broader energy sector. Through these efforts, the company aims to decrease emissions by 21% by 2026.
Founded in 1963 by Mauro Saviola in Viadana, Italy, the company transitioned from a small carpentry shop to a leading manufacturer of particle boards, specializing in circular economy practices. The Group has positioned itself as a key player in the green economy with its exclusive production of 100% recycled wood panels. Today, under the leadership of Mauro’s son, Alessandro, the company has become the world’s foremost wood recycler, converting reclaimed materials into stylish and eco-friendly furniture components.
The transformation began in the 1990s, when Gruppo Saviola started its journey into post-consumer wood recycling. The founder’s innovative vision led to a self-sustaining system for collecting, transforming, and regenerating wood without cutting down trees. With a network of collection points across Europe, the company recovers over 1.5 million tons of used wood annually, saving approximately 10,000 trees each day. This commitment is exemplified in products like the Poro Registro panels, which replicate the look and feel of virgin wood.
With a workforce of around 2,000 employees, the company achieved over €900 million in revenue in 2022. The company has invested €120 million in new technologies, acquisitions, and facilities, earning its status as an eco-ethical company committed to sustainability and recycling ethics. Moreover, the Group actively supports cultural and sports initiatives and assists vulnerable communities through partnerships with local organizations.
“Since the beginning, we have formed over 150 partnerships with local entities and associations”, says the president. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we supported the medical district of Oglio Po Casalmaggiore, local administrations, and community associations. Our commitment goes beyond just helping the territory; each year, we distribute additional bonuses to our employees in recognition of positive financial results. In June 2022, for example, we awarded our staff €2,000 each, amounting to a total of €3 million, and in January 2023, we provided another bonus of €1,500”.
Gruppo Saviola emphasizes sustainability through effective communication campaigns, such as “Nuova Vita”, which raises awareness about the value of recycling in the furniture sector. Prominent figures, including actor Giovanni Storti and singer Francesco Gabbani, have supported this initiative as brand ambassadors.
